Finding a school in Switzerland
across all 26 cantons

Switzerland has some of Europe's best state schools and its greatest concentration of international schools โ€” but navigating 26 cantonal systems across three language regions is genuinely complex. We make it simple.

The Swiss System

26 cantonal systems. Three language regions. One move.

Switzerland doesn't have a single national school system. It has 26 of them โ€” one per canton. The language of instruction, school structure, application process, and even the school day length varies between Zurich, Geneva, and Lugano.

For expat families, this complexity is compounded by Switzerland's unique mix: world-class free cantonal schools alongside some of the most prestigious (and expensive) international and boarding schools in the world. Knowing which option makes sense for your family requires understanding both.

Cantonal state schools
Switzerland's free state schools are excellent by international standards โ€” but they operate under 26 different cantonal systems. The language of instruction (German, French, or Italian) depends on where you live. Quality is consistently high, integration support varies.
International schools
Switzerland has one of the densest concentrations of international schools in the world, particularly around Geneva, Zurich, Zug, and Lausanne. These typically offer IB, British, or American curricula and cost CHF 25,000โ€“55,000/year.
Swiss boarding schools
Switzerland is home to some of the world's most prestigious boarding schools, particularly in the French-speaking cantons. These offer exceptional academic and extracurricular programmes but come with significant fees โ€” typically CHF 60,000โ€“120,000/year.
Bilingual & private day schools
Between the fully state and fully international options, there are private day schools offering bilingual instruction (German/English, French/English) at mid-range fees of CHF 15,000โ€“30,000/year, popular with long-term expat families.
