The 2026/2027 Admissions Calendar

Standard windows for Portugal's international and private schools. Miss one, and you're playing catch-up.

1
Prime Window
OCT – JAN
"The Early Bird"

This is the prime touring window. If you are aiming for "The Big Three" (St. Julian's, Carlucci, St. Dominic's), you must have your initial tour and registration done by now.

2
High Stress
FEB – MARCH
"The Selection"

Most private schools conduct assessments. This is the highest stress period for families. Prepare your child's records, references, and language assessments well in advance.

3
Current Phase
APRIL – JUNE
"The Shuffle"

Families are moving, spots are opening up. This is the best time for "Plan B" school applications. Late movers can find excellent placements if they act quickly.

4
Last Chance
JULY – AUG
"The Scramble"

Only schools with extra capacity remain. If you arrive now, you will likely be offered a "Late Entry" spot. Act fast — the best remaining places go within days.

You are currently in the April–June "Shuffle" window.

Spots are opening as families finalise their moves. This is the best moment to apply for Plan B schools — but act within weeks, not months.

Neighbourhood vs. School — The Commute Reality Check

In the Lisbon–Cascais corridor, traffic isn't just a "rush hour" problem — it's a strategic factor in your school choice. Your child could spend 10+ hours a week in a car.

🏖️

Cascais & Estoril Hub

Best for: Families who want a beach lifestyle and outdoor sports.

Primary Schools

  • St. Julian's
  • St. John's
  • CAISL (American)
  • TASIS Portugal (Sintra)

Commute Tip

If you live in the centre of Cascais, these schools are 10–20 minutes away. If you live in Lisbon, the morning commute via the A5 highway can take 45–60 minutes.

Pro Tip

Commute Warning: Living in Cascais? See our Page 4 Commute Guide to avoid the 1-hour A5 traffic trap — and check whether your school's bus has a Late Activity route before you sign.

🏙️

Lisbon City Hub

Best for: Urban professionals who want walkability and culture.

Primary Schools

  • Lycée Français (Charles Lepierre)
  • Redbridge School
  • Astoria International
  • United Lisbon

Commute Tip

Park of Nations (United Lisbon) is 20–30 minutes from the city centre. Estrela/Príncipe Real are perfect for the French Lycée but nightmare zones for parking near other schools.

🏔️

Sintra & Belas Hub

Best for: Families looking for larger villas and cooler mountain air.

Primary Schools

  • TASIS Portugal
  • Carlucci (CAISL)
  • St. Dominic's

Commute Tip

Sintra schools serve the Cascais expat community via a dedicated "back road" (the N9-1). Avoid the IC19 highway at all costs between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM.

"The Catch" — School Bus Realities

Most top-tier schools (St. Julian's, CAISL) offer a private bus service. This is the sanity-saving option for families who live outside the immediate school zone.

€150–€250
Per month, per child
+30 min
Added per journey (multiple stops)
5:00 PM
Late Activity route (if available)

Working Parent Tip

While convenient, the bus often adds 30 minutes to the journey as it makes multiple stops. If you are a working parent, always check whether the school offers a "Late Activity" route (usually departing at 5:00 PM) — this is essential if your child wants to do after-school sports or clubs without you needing to collect them.
