Honest Local Insight
What families actually find when they arrive
Fewer UK-style soft plays than you'd expect

Portugal has far fewer dedicated soft play centres than the UK. The culture leans toward outdoor parks, activity clubs, and structured classes. Don't expect a soft play on every high street — the ones listed here are the good ones.

After-school life works differently here

Most kids do AECs (Actividades de Enriquecimento Curricular) — free after-school activities run by the school itself, like music, sport, and English. Private activity centres like the ones listed here are used on top of that, not instead of it.

Pay-per-session or monthly — know before you go

Most places offer either pay-per-session (flexible, good for trying things out) or monthly subscriptions (better value if you're committing). Always ask which model they use — some only do monthly and won't let you drop in.

Best places for expat kids to make friends

iKids and Little Lisbon attract a good mix of expat and local families. KidZania is popular with international families at weekends. SandCastle's work café model means you'll meet other expat parents while the kids play.
