State schools (Escola Pública)
Portugal has a well-regarded free state system. All children resident in Portugal are entitled to a place. Applications go through the Portal das Matrículas in spring, with places allocated based on address and catchment area.
PEBI bilingual state schools
Portugal's PEBI (Programa de Ensino Bilingue Inglês) programme offers English-medium instruction alongside Portuguese — completely free. Places are in high demand and are allocated by lottery. Most families moving to Portugal have never heard of PEBI, and we make sure they do.
Portuguese private schools
Private schools (Colégios) offer smaller classes, better English provision, and more flexibility than the state system. Many have bilingual or international sections. Fees typically range from €400–€1,200/month.
International schools
Lisbon and Porto have well-established international schools following British, IB, American, and French curricula. These are typically €10,000–€25,000/year and popular with temporarily relocating families who want curriculum continuity.
