Finding a school in the Netherlands
from Amsterdam to The Hague

The Netherlands has strong free state schools, a unique TTO bilingual programme, and some of Europe's best international schools. Knowing which option suits your family takes local knowledge โ€” and that's where we come in.

The Dutch System

A school system designed for both locals and international families

The Netherlands is one of the most internationally-minded countries in Europe. English is widely spoken, international schools are well-established (particularly in The Hague and Amsterdam), and the state system has built in a formal bilingual option โ€” TTO โ€” specifically for families who want English-medium education within the state sector.

The Dutch secondary streaming system (VMBO/HAVO/VWO) is one of the more significant differences from the British or American model. Understanding where it fits โ€” and where your child is likely to land within it โ€” is something we help families navigate early.

Dutch state schools (Openbare scholen)
The Netherlands has a well-funded, well-regarded free state school system. All children resident in the Netherlands are entitled to a place. Teaching is in Dutch, and while Dutch schools are welcoming, settling in without Dutch language ability takes time.
TTO bilingual schools
TTO (Tweetalig Onderwijs) is a Dutch government programme where secondary school lessons are taught 50% in English and 50% in Dutch. Places are competitive and sought-after by expat and internationally-minded Dutch families. We know which schools run TTO and how to apply.
International schools
The Netherlands โ€” particularly the Randstad (Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht) โ€” has excellent international schools following IB, British, and American curricula. The Hague has a particularly high concentration due to the number of international organisations based there.
Bijzondere scholen (faith & special schools)
A large proportion of Dutch schools are "bijzonder" โ€” run on religious or pedagogical principles (Catholic, Protestant, Montessori, Waldorf) while being state-funded. These are free and open to all, and some have stronger English provision than standard state schools.
