City Overview

The Zurich school market, explained

Zurich is home to some of the world's most prestigious (and expensive) international schools, centered around the Goldcoast and Silvercoast of Lake Zurich. However, the local "Gymnasium" system is highly regarded and free — if your child can pass the entrance exams. Determining whether to stay in the international "bubble" or integrate into the Swiss system is the biggest decision for any Zurich-bound family.

Key Areas & Neighbourhoods
Goldcoast (Küsnacht, Zollikon)Prestige Zone

Zurich's most exclusive residential area on the eastern shore of Lake Zurich. Home to ZIS and many senior executives. Stunning lake views and excellent schools.

Silvercoast (Thalwil, Horgen)Family Hub

Western shore of Lake Zurich. More affordable than the Goldcoast with good international school access. Popular with families seeking more space.

Zurich City (Seefeld)Urban Option

Upscale city neighbourhood with excellent transport links. Several international schools and proximity to the city's cultural offerings.

ZugTax-Efficient

Canton Zug has Switzerland's lowest tax rates and a large international community. 20 minutes from Zurich by train. Several international schools and excellent state schools.

Insider Knowledge

What most families don't know about Zurich

1

ZIS (Zurich International School) has a waitlist of 1–2 years for popular year groups. Register the moment you know you're moving to Zurich — even before you have a confirmed start date.

2

The Swiss Volksschule (state school) is genuinely excellent and free. Many expat families who integrate into the Swiss system report that their children become fluent in German within 18 months.

3

Canton Zug (20 minutes from Zurich) has Switzerland's lowest tax rates and a large international community. Many Zurich-based expats choose to live in Zug for tax efficiency while accessing Zurich schools.

4

The Swiss Gymnasium entrance exam is in February/March of Year 6 (age 11–12). Preparation typically starts 1–2 years in advance. German language proficiency is essential.

5

Zurich's international schools are among the most expensive in the world. Many companies offer education allowances for expat employees — negotiate this as part of your relocation package before accepting a job offer.

How We Verify Our 2026/27 School Data
Last Audit: April 13, 2026
Fully Updated for 2026 Enrollment
Pillar 01
Legislative Monitoring

We track national policy changes in real-time.

Example: Our 2026 England data accounts for the 20% VAT addition to independent school fees — a change many global directories still haven't calculated.

Pillar 02
Direct School Outreach

We don't just look at websites.

Example: For our Portugal guides, we verified the specific PEBI bilingual status for the 2026 cycle at the cluster level (Agrupamentos), ensuring parents don't apply to schools that have paused their English-language streams.

Pillar 03
Financial Modelling

Our calculator uses "Total Cost of Ownership" logic.

Example: We include registration fees, mandatory uniforms, and "voluntary" contributions that schools often leave out of their base tuition quotes.

100% Independent — No commissions from schools
100% IndependentNo Commissions

We never take commissions, referral fees, or payments from schools. Every recommendation is based purely on what's best for your family — not what's best for our bottom line.
