Three extracts — the independent school directory with true post-VAT costs, the admissions appeal letter strategy, and the cheatsheet with national dates and grammar geography.
VAT at 20% applies to all independent school fees from 1 January 2025. "Post-VAT" column = published fee × 1.20. "True Year 1 Cost" includes registration fee + uniform. Over 100 schools have closed since January 2025 — verify the school is still operating.
Apply for bursary in November of Year 5 — two years before entry. St Paul's Foundation Bursaries can cover 100% of post-VAT fees for qualifying families. The bursary application is separate from and earlier than the academic admission process. Do not wait until you have an offer to enquire about bursary support.
Lower pre-VAT fees than London. Known for one of the most generous bursary programmes in English independent education — households below £50k may qualify for substantial awards. The VAT calculator in this pack shows exact figures for any fee level. Consider Manchester as a genuine alternative to London for families where cost is a factor.
The full directory contains 17 verified independent schools with post-VAT fee breakdowns, bursary details, and insider notes.

"We had no idea the VAT change had added £6,000 to the fees we were quoted. The calculator showed us the real number before we committed. We ended up applying for a bursary we didn't know existed."
"The grammar school section was exactly what we needed. We didn't know 11-plus registration opened in September of Year 5 — we nearly missed it entirely. Our daughter sat the exam and got in."
"The SIF section saved us. We submitted the CAF and assumed that was enough. The pack explained the SIF and we submitted it the same day. Without it, our preference would have been ignored."
VAT changed the numbers. This pack recalculates them — and maps every route from grammar schools to bursaries.
