About the school

Lycée Français International de Porto (LFIP) is a private French school operating under the AEFE network (Agence pour l'Enseignement Français à l'Étranger) — France's official global network of 600 schools in 138 countries. Founded in 1963, LFIP serves around 900 students aged 3–18 across the full French curriculum from Maternelle through Terminale, leading to the French Baccalaureate. The school is set in exceptional grounds adjacent to Parque de Serralves — one of Porto's most celebrated green spaces — and near the ocean, offering a natural and serene environment that is genuinely rare for a school setting. LFIP is one of the most respected AEFE schools globally, known for academic results above French national averages. Portuguese is compulsory throughout, and English is also taught. A school bus service covers greater Porto including Matosinhos, Maia, Gondomar and Vila Nova de Gaia. French families who are AEFE members can apply for government bursaries covering 25–100% of fees based on income — making this potentially free for qualifying families.

What families say

“The setting is unlike any school I've ever seen. The children play in what feels like a park every day. And the fees are extraordinary value for what you get.”

French family, moved from Lyon — Maternelle and CE2

“We applied for the AEFE bursary and received 60% coverage. Effectively we're paying less than €2,000 a year for a full French Baccalaureate education. Remarkable.”

Consider carefully
  • Instruction entirely in French — not suitable for non-French-speaking families
  • Serralves location requires a car or school bus — not central Porto
  • Designed primarily for French-speaking families
  • Language transition significant for non-French children even with support
  • No boarding option
Portugal Nest practical note

Instruction is entirely in French — LFIP is not suitable for families without French, and the language transition for non-French-speaking children is significant even with support. The Serralves location is beautiful but not central Porto — you will need a car or the school bus. For French families relocating to Porto, however, this is the obvious choice: exceptional academic standards, a stunning setting, and fees that are roughly one-third of comparable schools. The AEFE bursary system means qualifying families may pay very little or nothing at all.
